Man treads water for hours between New York City and Sandy Hook before being rescued

A man who washed up on a New York City beach treaded water for hours before being rescued at Sandy Hook on Monday, Middletown Township police reported.

Authorities said they received a call at 9 a.m. about a man floating toward Sandy Hook who was pulled from the water. They say 34-year-old Pete Ordane of New York City entered the water near Breezy Point in Queens.

According to police, a commercial fisherman and his son from Port Monmouth saw Ordane struggling about two miles from shore and pulled him from the water. After noticing the swimmer in distress, the man and his son brought him aboard their boat and assisted him before taking him back to Monmouth Cove Marina in Port Monmouth, according to police.

According to police, emergency personnel cared for the man. Ordane was found in good condition and released after refusing further medical treatment. Police gave him fresh dry clothes and some food.

According to police, Ordane was pulled out by the tide and treaded water for several hours until fishermen found him.

Authorities said the man and son who rescued Ordane live in the Port Monmouth neighborhood of Middletown and wish to remain anonymous.
