Colombia’s football president speaks out after arrest at Copa America

MIAMI – After spending the night in a Miami jail, the Colombian soccer president and his son have posted bail and are speaking out.

“It was totally unfair, and we are only human. Anything can happen. But they started it. It was ridiculous,” said son Ramon Jamil Jesurún.

“This pass says I have unlimited access. And the security guard, one of those who wanted to feel important, didn’t recognize it. I insisted that I be allowed in. And he pushed me,” said the elder Jesurún, president of the Colombian Football Association.

Ramon Jesurún, 71, and his son Ramon Jamil Jesurún, 43, were arrested and charged with assault on an officer. Police say father and son got into a physical altercation during chaos at the Copa America on Sunday at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, attacking two security guards and a woman who tried to intervene.

Hundreds of fans stormed through the southwest gate of the stadium.

Some fans jumped over fences while others climbed through air conditioning vents to get into the game.

The Jesurúns appeared before the bail court on Monday afternoon along with other detainees.

Fernando Perez was one of them.

He told CBS News Miami that he had tickets and flew in from Houston to see the game. When he arrived, he says, he was caught up in the chaos.

“At one point, one of the gates opened. People started pouring in,” Perez said. “I was thrown to the ground and tasered. You know, it was horrible. I was arrested and spent 24 hours in jail for doing nothing,” Perez said.

Perez was charged with assault on a police officer and resisting an officer without the use of force.

The judge issued a restraining order against Ramón Jamil Jesurún on behalf of the woman who was injured in the brawl.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava expressed outrage at the chaos that broke out at the Copa America game and said the incident was currently ongoing.
