A father of two remains in intensive care after being crushed by a ten-ton steel beam in a horrific industrial accident.

Pete Munyan, 47, was seriously injured at the Bluescope Steel plant in Hastings on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula on July 1.

Mr Munyan was working the night shift and was stranded for two hours after the crane moving the beam broke down.

Special equipment was needed to remove the beam and Mr Munyan was flown by helicopter to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Mr Munyan suffered serious, life-changing injuries, including multiple pelvic fractures and two spinal fractures.

He underwent numerous operations, including the amputation of his left foot.

Deb Baker, Mr Munyan’s cousin, told 7News there were no signs of brain injury or compromise to his airway.

“He was not conscious, but he was responsive. For example, when people asked him questions, he nodded his head and could shake his hands.”

“So we know he’s fighting in there,” she said.

Mr. Munyan grew up in Rochester, New York and moved to Australia in 2006.

He lives with his wife Michelle and two teenage children, Lana and Rhys, in Dromana, a seaside suburb on the Mornington Peninsula, 57 kilometres south of Melbourne’s central business district.

Ms Baker said his wife and children had been “incredibly strong and resilient” following Mr Munyan’s life-changing accident.

She told the Herald Sun that her cousin was a real adventurer with a great sense of humor and a talented, all-American sportswoman.

“He is one of the most amazing people you will ever meet,” she said.

“He always does the best for the people around him.”

She said a first responder at the scene said Pete was “one of the bravest and toughest people he had ever seen, which is no surprise to anyone in the family.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist the family with ongoing medical costs and future expenses.

“Pete is one of the good ones: kind, loyal and always the first to jump in and help others with his trademark energy and smile,” the GoFundMe page says.

Ms Baker said the family was extremely grateful for the support.

“It’s just so heartwarming, with all the dark things that are happening… to see the good in people is a positive thing.”

Worksafe Victoria is investigating the incident.
