Racial slur incident leads to OU fraternity investigation

Former OU football star Ryan Broyles claimed Thursday that he was the target of racial slurs shouted at him from a window at the Kappa Sigma dormitory on campus.

The university confirmed to Tulsa World that the fraternity has investigated and removed a member who was involved in the behavior.

On the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Broyles posted a report about the incident at 6:48 a.m. Thursday:

“This needs to be shared: Two weeks ago I walked past Kappa Sig on the University of Oklahoma campus. I hear (the N-word) being shouted repeatedly out the window at me. I paused, speechless and hurt but not surprised. My children were with me. It’s 2024, parents, do better.”

Broyles provided more details about the incident in a second post.

After Tulsa World reached out to OU’s marketing and communications department, the university responded Thursday afternoon with the following statement:

“We were made aware of offensive behavior on April 20, 2024, in which two students and another person shouted curses and sexually and racially offensive language from the window of a fraternity as several groups of people walked past the building. The University of Oklahoma condemns this unacceptable behavior. Such behavior does not reflect the values we hold.

“OU takes all reports seriously and strives to address them fully using all measures available within university policy. “We recognize the critical role of education and continue to work tirelessly to promote a culture of respect, integrity and responsibility among our student body and broader community.”

The Tulsa World reached out to the Kappa Sigma state chapter but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

Broyles did not respond to a Tulsa World request for comment shortly before noon, but published a third X post at 2:02 p.m. that said:

“I won’t talk about it anymore. There was already an internal investigation. The names I mentioned have already been identified. There are over 15 witnesses. Fault was admitted. I simply posted to shed light on the current situation. We can do better!”

Broyles is an Oklahoma City native and a graduate of Norman High School. He played wide receiver for the Sooners from 2007 to 2011, recording 349 receptions for 4,586 yards and 45 touchdowns. He still ranks first in OU program history in all three categories.
