Russia suspends fishing cooperation with Japan in the Kuril Islands from July 15

Russia will suspend fishing cooperation with Japan in the area of Signalny Island in the Small Kuril chain due to an incident involving a lighthouse, the Russian Foreign Ministry said, APA reports, citing TASS.

“The Japanese side recently requested information on the ‘power outage’ in the lighthouse on this island through diplomatic channels in Moscow and Tokyo. At the same time, no reports of malfunctions were received from other participants in the navigation in this area. The Russian side was ‘requested’ to resume stable operation to support safe navigation, including laminaria harvesting by Japanese fishermen,” the ministry said.

“In this regard, in order to avoid possible incidents, the Russian side decided to suspend Japanese fishing in the area of Signalny Island from July 15 until the completion of the scheduled preventive maintenance of the lighthouse,” the ministry added.
