BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The boyfriend of an Atlanta man found dead in Alabama has released a statement through his attorney saying he is “currently grieving the loss of his loved one.”

Deundray Cottrell went missing in Birmingham after visiting her sister and her boyfriend Julian Morris for the Fourth of July. Police found Cottrell’s body the following day.

Police have named Morris as a person of interest, but not a suspect, in Cottrell’s disappearance and death. On Wednesday night, a lawyer for Morris said his client also wants answers.

“Mr. Morris is a licensed veteran who served his country faithfully as a Marine. He has never been convicted of a misdemeanor or crime. Despite the false information circulating about him in this situation, he loved Deundray Cottrell and is currently grieving the loss of his loved one,” attorney Victor Revill wrote.

“Mr. Morris also wants answers and expects those answers after a full and thorough investigation. On the advice of his attorney, he will make no further statements at this time,” he added.

Birmingham police said Morris was the last person to see or hear from Cottrell before she disappeared. Investigators spoke to Morris before Cottrell’s body was found.

“Since Deundray Cottrell’s body was discovered, Julian Morris, his family and his attorney have NOT spoken to BPD investigators,” police said. “BPD respects Julian Morris’s wishes not to make a statement.”
