Accident involving five cars and wasps is one of the unusual accidents in Ventura County

A five-vehicle crash in Thousand Oaks on Tuesday that caused three cars to spin and destroy a wasp nest resulted in significant damage to several vehicles and numerous stings but no serious injuries, authorities said.

The crash was one of several freak accidents that occurred in the county on Tuesday. Those accidents included a car that rear-ended a house and a deputy sheriff’s patrol car that overturned.

None of the accidents resulted in serious injuries.

Lakeview Gorge

The five-vehicle crash was reported about 12:10 p.m. on southbound 101 near Lakeview Canyon Road, said Officer Ryan Ayers of the California Highway Patrol’s Moorpark office. One vehicle struck another and the two flew apart, he said, with three vehicles landing on a sloping area next to the highway.

One vehicle left the road north of Lakeview, Ayers said, and two more left the road south of the road, where one struck a tree and the other overturned.

The crash displaced a wasp nest.

“There were wasps everywhere,” Ayers said.

They came out with stings. Ayers didn’t know how many people were stung, but people on the scene were waiting for firefighters to spray foam around the nest to stun the insects.

One car landed about 15 to 18 meters from the highway. The other two landed 9 to 12 meters down the slope. All three vehicles were badly damaged.

Two women from two different vehicles were taken by ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries, Ayers said.

The incident closed the right lane of the highway for emergency crews and tow trucks trying to remove vehicles from the side, causing traffic to back up for about a half-mile, Ayers said.

As of Tuesday evening, investigators were still trying to determine how the crash occurred, he said.

Patrol car overturns

A Ventura County Sheriff’s patrol car overturned in a crash with another vehicle late Tuesday afternoon at a rural intersection west of Camarillo.

No serious injuries were reported.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported at 4:19 p.m. at the intersection of Santa Clara Avenue and Central Avenue. The crossing is located in the middle of agricultural fields.

A spokesman for the Ventura-area CHP office, which is investigating the accident, declined to provide details Tuesday evening.

Sheriff Captain James Sullivan said the deputy’s Chevrolet Tahoe rolled over. Another vehicle was involved in the crash. No details were available about the second vehicle or the circumstances leading to the collision.

According to dispatch information from the Ventura County Fire Department, firefighters and paramedics responded. All units were gone from the scene in less than 40 minutes, according to online records.
