After Rottweiler attack, Tamil Nadu bans 23 'dangerous' dog breeds

The Union Animal Husbandry Department has already recommended bans on various dog breeds.

Chennai:

After a Rottweiler attacked a five-year-old girl in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Department on Thursday banned any import, breeding or sale of 33 breeds of dogs considered “dangerous” to humans.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, the following dog breeds are prohibited: Tosa Inu, Fila Brasileiro, American Bulldog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, Kangal Shepherd Dog, Terrier, Mastiff, Tornjak, Cane Corso, Wolfhounds, Akbash, Pitbull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Boerboel , Central Asian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Canaria, Moscow Watchdog and Bandog.

It said that the dogs in the above list should immediately undergo sterilization surgery to prevent reproduction.

The Union Animal Husbandry Department has already recommended bans on several breeds of dogs, including Rottweilers, pit bulls, American bulldogs and others that are considered dangerous. It has directed state governments and Union Territories to ensure that licenses are not granted for the sale, breeding and keeping of such dogs as pets which pose a threat to human life.
