2 dead, 19 injured in shooting on Detroit’s east side, police say

(CBS) – Two people were killed and 19 others injured in a shooting on Detroit’s east side early Sunday morning, according to Michigan State Police.

The shooting occurred in the area of ​​Reno Street and Rossini Drive. Witnesses said the shooting was the result of a late-night street party.

According to authorities, no suspect is in custody.

The MSP Homicide Unit is assisting Detroit Police with the investigation. Detroit Police confirmed that multiple people were shot in the 13000 block of Rossini early Sunday morning and two people died as a result of the shooting.

“Investigators and forensic experts are currently analyzing all available evidence and will continue their work throughout the weekend,” Detroit police said in a statement.

Detroit police said Sunday they are implementing a new comprehensive strategy regarding street parties. They will unveil the plan at a news conference Monday morning with Detroit Police Chief James White and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and provide an update on Sunday’s shooting.

“This is not normal. This is unusual,” said Sandra Turner-Handy, director of the Community Violence Intervention Team. “It’s summer and we have these street parties, these spontaneous street parties happening all over the city. Our police are trying to stamp them out, find them so they can stop them.”
