Beryl is heading to Texas and rainy days are ahead

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Outlook today Beryl will not affect our weather this weekend as today is a typical summer day with showers and hot spells between the thunderstorms. Highs in the afternoon will rise to just under 30 degrees.

Our rain chance is at 50% to start the weekend, but drops to 30% on Sunday. This drop in rain chance is due to Beryl approaching Texas and getting stronger, decreasing moisture availability. Temperatures will climb back up to the mid 90s on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Beryl

Beryl is currently in the Gulf of Mexico, but has weakened considerably from passing over the Yucatan. It will take some time for the storm to recover from its path over the Yucatan, meaning Beryl will likely remain a tropical storm even into Sunday. As the storm approaches Texas on Monday, there will be a small window of opportunity for rapid intensification as it approaches the Texas coast.

Rain forecast

Once Beryl moves inland and turns back toward Louisiana, some of the storm’s associated wave of tropical moisture will move eastward into Louisiana. I expect rain chances to be between 60 and 80% during the first half of the work week when that happens. The Weather Forecast Center is forecasting rainfall amounts of 7 inches or more near the Texas coast over the next seven days. Locally, rainfall averages 2 to 2.5 inches.
