17-year-old shot dead by officers during welfare check

The incident occurred at a residence in Columbus, Nebraska.

A teenager was shot and killed by a police officer conducting a welfare check at a Nebraska home, state police said.

The Nebraska State Patrol said it was investigating the shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Columbus, a city about 90 miles west of Omaha.

“Columbus Police conducted a welfare check on a subject following a report of possible self-harm,” the Nebraska State Patrol said in a news release.

During the operation, an officer shot the 17-year-old, state police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Columbus police contacted the Nebraska State Patrol to conduct the “in-custody death investigation,” which is ongoing, state police said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, state police said.

There is no active threat to the community, Columbus police said.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Columbus Police Department are not releasing further details about the shooting at this time.
