Bareilly man jailed for 7 years for 'raping' wife when she was 13

A court in the Indian state of Bareilly in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a 30-year-old man to seven years in prison for kidnapping and raping an underage woman, who is now his wife, in 2015.

The alleged victim was 13 years old when a case of child abduction was registered against the girl, who was then about 20 years old, in the same year following a complaint by the girl’s father.

“The court examined seven prosecution witnesses. The plaintiff and the victim did not support the prosecution theory and were declared hostile,” said defence lawyer Mohammad Firoz.

In the FIR, the girl’s father claimed that his distant relatives were involved in the kidnapping of his daughter.

During the investigation, the police conducted searches in several locations. The girl was found almost six months later and the accused was arrested.

The girl’s statement was recorded by the police and a judge. Based on her statement, the police filed charges of rape against the teenager.

“The girl said she went alone with the teenager,” said lawyer Mohammad Firoz. ENS
