Investigation in Florida against former Detroit Tiger Craig Monroe

Craig Monroe, a former Detroit Tigers baseball player and current television and radio commentator for the team, is under investigation by police for alleged sex crimes in Florida, according to documents obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

The news comes weeks after the Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit removed Monroe from broadcasts after allegations of sexual assault were posted on social media.

Gabriella Ruiz, a spokeswoman for the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that authorities are investigating Monroe but declined to provide further details.

“The investigation is in full swing and anyone with information is asked to come forward,” Ruiz said in an email on Tuesday afternoon. He declined to provide any further information.

On Tuesday, the Free Press filed a request with the sheriff’s office under Florida law prohibiting the release of documents about Monroe. The documents provided are heavily redacted, but show that on June 12, someone from the office spoke with a caller about an “alleged sex crime” in Port Charlotte, Florida.

The report states that the investigation description is an “attempt to allege a sex crime against children.”

Until recently, Monroe worked as an analyst for Bally Sports Detroit, covering the Tigers. He was abruptly pulled from his job after the June 9 game and has not worked on a television broadcast since.

Both the Tigers and Bally Sports confirmed that they had removed him from their schedule, citing allegations of misconduct posted on social media.

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the allegations on social media and take them seriously. As previously stated, Mr. Monroe was not on the broadcast schedule and will remain so indefinitely. We will have no further comment and all questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe,” the network and team said in a joint statement.

The Free Press could not immediately reach Monroe, but tried several phone numbers and left messages. The woman who made the allegations said in at least one video that she had already contacted police. The Free Press contacted her on Saturday via X, formerly known as Twitter, and said she was consulting with her attorney. The Free Press reached out again on Tuesday but had not yet received a response.
