Tracking isolated storms Thursday; Isolated severe storms possible

The weather will be active late in the week as a strong cold front approaches Thursday into Friday. There is a chance of widespread showers and isolated strong to severe storms on Thursday, initially in the morning hours and then again in the mid to late afternoon hours. As warm and humid conditions continue to prevail, we will see enough energy for some strong storms, with damaging winds and hail being the main threats. Temperatures will reach near 90° Thursday afternoon.

As we approach Friday, all eyes are on a pattern change. The cold front will pass through the region. The presence of a wave of low pressure developing along this front could mean more rain could occur Friday afternoon, particularly along and east of Highway 17. Friday’s high temperatures will drop to 70°, raising the risk of thunderstorms somewhat reduced.

The front will move out Friday evening, leaving behind great weather for Mother’s Day weekend. We will enjoy lower humidity and mostly sunny skies on both Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon highs in the mid-70s and cooler nights in the 50s.

This week, Hurricane Preparedness Week will also highlight various aspects of hurricanes. Each day covers topics essential to understanding and preparing for hurricanes, including how they form, their strength and how to stay informed. While the official start of hurricane season is still weeks away, now is the perfect time to arm yourself with knowledge and preparedness.
