Attorney Larry Bendesky compares it to the breakdowns at Giants Stadium in 2007 and the Rome subway in 2018

PHILADELPHIA, June 30, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Escalator accident trial attorney Larry Bendesky of Saltz Mongeluzzi Bendesky says yesterday’s catastrophic escalator failure at Milwaukee Brewers Stadium that injured numerous passengers appears “eerily similar to two other major escalator safety violations following sporting events: in 2007 at Giants Stadium, New Jersey, and in 2018 in the Rome subway system.” Attorney Bendesky, who represented the victim-plaintiffs in the Giants Stadium litigation as lead defense counsel, is available to discuss yesterday’s incident, including the mechanical safety review process currently underway and the potential legal ramifications.

“Based on my review of the harrowing press reports from American Family Field, this failure has all the hallmarks of a brake system failure,” commented Mr. Bendesky. “As with the Giants Stadium incident, where we found numerous preventable maintenance and mechanical deficiencies contributed to the disaster, it is likely that every operational component – starting with the brakes – will be closely examined to determine why the stadium escalator accelerated rapidly without warning and then jerked uncontrollably, rather than gradually applying the emergency brakes that would have prevented serious injuries. Were parts worn? Were safety inspections up to date? Was it overloaded? These are some of the many important questions that the investigation will need to answer.”

In the Giants Stadium incident, eight football fans were seriously injured – one victim had to have his leg amputated – when the escalator’s brakes failed and the steps accelerated violently before colliding with each other. Mr. Bendesky’s experts concluded that inadequate maintenance contributed to the horrific accident.
