Investigation shows weak tornado reached Melbourne

Due to severe weather, several homes belonging to Melbourne residents are affected by storm damage on Thursday. Melbourne police said emergency crews responded to a neighborhood near Croton Road and Sarno Road around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of storm damage to homes. The National Weather Service said preliminary evidence suggests a weak tornado struck Melbourne. The tornado was on the ground for three minutes. This came after two severe weather warnings were issued for Brevard County. Some residents in the affected neighborhood reported being without power Thursday night. Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey posted on Facebook that Florida Power and Light would be working through the evening to restore power. Alfrey said he and the county’s emergency management director assessed some of the damage Thursday night. WESH 2 spoke with a homeowner whose roof was ripped off Thursday. He said his wife is wheelchair-bound and would normally have been home alone when her roof was ripped off. He was grateful he picked her up shortly before, but he said he was devastated by the damage. “My roof was only replaced five years ago,” Keith Dodd said. “So the roof was brand new and it was ripped off in less than five minutes. So it doesn’t look really good. I’m not really OK.”

According to Melbourne Police, no injuries have been reported so far.

Some residents of the affected neighborhood said they were without power on Thursday evening.

Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey posted on Facebook that Florida Power and Light would be working throughout the evening to restore power.

Alfrey said he and the county’s emergency management director assessed some of the damage Thursday evening.

WESH 2 spoke to a homeowner whose roof was blown off on Thursday.

He said his wife was wheelchair-bound and would normally have been home alone when the roof was torn off. He was grateful he had picked her up shortly beforehand, but said the damage had devastated him.

“My roof was replaced just five years ago,” said Keith Dodd. “That was a brand new roof on that house, and it was torn off in less than five minutes. So it’s not really good. I’m not really OK.”
