Tropical wave near Africa likely to develop within a few days

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – The National Hurricane Center says a tropical wave near the African coast could develop into at least a tropical depression over the weekend.

The wave was located several hundred miles west-southwest of Cape Verde and brought scattered rain showers and thunderstorms Thursday, moving westward at 15 to 20 mph (24 to 32 kph).

A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to develop several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands.

The probability of it occurring within the next 48 hours is 60%.

If it develops into a tropical storm, it will be named “Beryl”, the second name on the list for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
