The Philippine military said on Thursday it had killed seven communist rebels in a firefight in the north of the country.

The firefight occurred the previous day near the town of Pantabangan when the army fought against about 20 New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas, said Maj. Jimson Masangkay, spokesman for the 7th Infantry Division.

A military statement said troops had recovered the bodies of seven rebels. There were no casualties among government troops.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has led one of the longest Maoist insurgencies in the world.

The Philippine military estimates that fewer than 2,000 guerrillas remain and firefights are less frequent.
