When officers arrived at the Pentagon apartment complex, Banks said he opened fire on them before they reached his third-floor front door.

Officers did not return fire, but instead took a defensive position and waited for backup. Palm Bay police and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded in large numbers and closed Babcock Street from Highway 192 to Hibiscus during rush hour.

According to police, Banks continued to fire at backup officers.

He was contacted by crisis negotiators and eventually left his apartment armed. At least two dozen shots were heard as police opened fire on the suspect, killing him right outside his front door.

No officer was injured during the entire situation. Melbourne Police issued the following statement.
