11 AM WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS MORNING’S BREAKING NEWS. A FATAL ACCIDENT DUE TO A CONSTRUCTION SITE IN WAUKESHA COUNTY. THAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ON CAPITOL DRIVE NEAR PEWAUKEE ROAD. WE’LL FIND 12 NEWS HANNAH HILYARD LIVE ON THE SITE. AND HANNAH, WHAT WAS THE ACCIDENT LIKE? HOW HAS THE ACCIDENT CHANGED SINCE OUR LAST UPDATE? ABOUT HALF AN HOUR AGO? WELL, GERRON, WE WERE ABLE TO CONFIRM THROUGH THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON DIED AS A RESULT OF THIS SERIOUS ACCIDENT HERE ON CAPITOL DRIVE. WE STILL HAVE SHERIFF’S DEPUTY AND INVESTIGATORS ON SITE, AND THE CRUSHED CAR WE SHOWED YOU IS STILL ON SITE, JUST PUSHED ON THESE GRASSY MEDIUMS HERE ALONG BUSY CAPITOL DRIVE. BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU A VIDEO FROM NEWS HELICOPTER 12 RIGHT AS IT ARRIVES. PARAMEDIC WORKERS SPOTTED THEMSELVES WORKING ON A PERSON AND FINALLY THOSE PARAMEDIC LOADED A TARPAUL OVER THE PERSON. NOW ENTRY. HERE ON THE GROUND. WE HAVE SEEN AT LEAST ONE AMBULANCE WITH SIRENS AND LIGHTS HEADING EAST ON 94. RIGHT NOW ALL WE SEE IS THE CRUSHED CAR BUT WHAT CAUSED THIS DAMAGE? THAT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME. THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THIS OR LABELLING THIS AS A MAJOR ACCIDENT RIGHT NOW. IT IS CLEAR THIS IS HAPPENING IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONSTRUCTION SITE. ON A NORMAL DAY, THE TRAFFIC IN THE EYE IS REDUCED TO ONE LANE FOR TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, HERE ON CAPITOL DRIVE NEAR PEWAUKEE ROAD, TRAFFIC IS PROHIBITED. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS SCENE, WE SEE SOME CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN A TRAILER ON THE OTHER SIDE, CLOSER TO PEWAUKEE ROAD. BUT FOR THE MOST PART IT LOOKS LIKE THE INVESTIGATORS HAVE PUT OUT THEIR EVIDENCE MARKERS, AND IT’S RELATIVELY QUIET HERE. WE WON’T GET THAT CLOSE AT THIS TIME. WE ARE WAITING FOR A REPORT FROM THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO KNOW THE EXACT NUMBER OF INJURIES AND DEATHS. BUT AGAIN, IN THE LAST HALF HOUR, THEY HAVE CONFIRMED THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON HAS DIED AS A RESULT OF THIS ACCIDENT. HERE AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE. HE IS FLYING OVER THE SITE IN NEWS HELICOPTER 12. MATT, WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE FROM YOUR STANDING POINT? RIGHT, GERRON, I WATCHED YOU PUT UP THOSE EVIDENCE MARKER. WHENEVER THERE’S A FATALITY IN AN ACCIDENT, YOU HAVE TO DO A FULL RECONSTRUCTION, AND YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE SOME WHITE EVIDENCE MARKER HERE THAT LEADS TO A COUPLE OF BALLS. UH, ONE OF THEM IS BENT OVER, AND THEN THERE ARE TWO OF HIS BASE MARKER, AND THEY’RE BROKEN OFF HERE. THEN THERE ARE A COUPLE MORE EVIDENCE MARKER AND A FOLDED-UP CONSTRUCTION SIGN. Then it gets a little closer to the intersection of Highway 164. We see a couple more barrels knocked over and you see a, one, uh, evidence marker right next to those bases. A little further on, we see some of the cement forms have been kind of displaced. And three, four, five more evidence markers right there at the intersection. So it looks like they’ve got a long way to go on this rebuild. Now the closure extends from High Field. Uh, they’re sending people either north or south and they’re winding through Meadowbrook here. UH, ON, UH, SWAN, AND THAT THEN FORCES THEM ONTO 164, WHICH IS ALSO CLOSED. SO IT’S A VERY DIFFICULT DETOUR. UH, TO GET THROUGH HERE, THEY FINALLY TAKE A CUTOFF THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND THEN BACK ONTO CAPITOL DRIVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE INCIDENT. SO IT’S A VERY CONFUSING TIME. A LOT OF DELAYS IN THE AREA. SO YOU WANT TO AVOID IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO BE IN ONE OF THE BUSINESSES DOWN. BUT OTHERWISE I WOULD SAY STAY AWAY FROM THE SCENE BECAUSE IT’S GOING TO TAKE A WHILE TO GET TO IT, UM, THEY HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED RECONSTRUCTION IN SERIOUSNESS YET. A construction worker and a driver were killed in an accident at a construction site near Capitol Drive and Pewaukee Road Wednesday morning. According to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office, a 49-year-old man was driving a pickup truck west on Capitol Drive and struck another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle, a 76-year-old woman, was killed. Authorities said the driver of the pickup truck continued west on Capitol Drive and struck two construction workers. One of them, a 46-year-old man, was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The other construction worker, a 47-year-old man, is expected to survive his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck is also expected to survive. Because of the accident, the intersection was closed during the investigation. It was reopened Wednesday afternoon.
