Around 3 a.m., Sanger police received a call from the Fast Trip gas station that a man had used the restroom but had not yet come out. Employees attempted to contact the man but received no response.

When officers arrived, they broke into the toilet to gain entry.

There they found a man covered in blood who had allegedly killed his father.

46-year-old Gilbert Canales was arrested.

A welfare check was conducted at a home on Diamond Street near DeWitt in Sanger.

Police said they could see a man lying on the ground with blood on his clothing.

Officers forced entry into the home and found 80-year-old Roel Canales, the suspect’s father, dead with multiple stab wounds.

“This appears to be a crime of passion or a crime of very personal nature, perhaps anger, but we feel the investigation is ongoing and we still have a lot of work to do,” said Commander Joshua Johnson of the SPD.

This is the first murder of the year in Sanger.

The police assume that this is an isolated incident.

This is still an ongoing investigation. If you have any information, call Sanger police at (559) 875-8521.
