The protocols require motor insurance companies to put in place procedures that allow accident victims to receive prompt treatment from a doctor of their choice without the need for prior authorisation from the insurance company.

The government is making it easier for people injured in a car accident to recover without having to pay for health care out of pocket. New diagnostic and treatment protocols under the Motor Insurance Act will allow accident victims to receive faster, less expensive treatment specifically for the most common types of injuries that occur in a car accident: sprains, strains and conditions associated with whiplash. The protocols require motor insurance companies to implement procedures that allow accident victims to seek immediate treatment from a doctor of their choice without the need for prior approval from the insurance company. Health care providers who choose to provide services under the new protocols will bill the insurance company directly for their services, eliminating the need for the accident victim to pay up front and wait for reimbursement from the insurance company. The new protocols will take effect on December 2.
