NFL analyst reveals which scenario is far-fetched for the 2024 season

The Buffalo Bills lost a lot of veteran talent this offseason but that’s no reason to panic

The Buffalo Bills have been tight time and time again over the past four years, but have failed to overcome the obstacle in the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs stood in their way and there is no better example than last season.

Kansas City traveled to Buffalo and beat the Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, ending Josh Allen’s season en route to another Super Bowl title. After the season, the Bills made big moves, including trading Stefon Diggs and losing Gabe Davis in free agency.

Allen has lost some weapons on offense and will face the difficult task of getting the Buffalo Bills over the hump without two of his best weapons. But how big is this story? One NFL writer doesn’t believe it’s that big of a deal.

Eric Edholm of NFL.com wrote about five far-fetched storylines and five that deserve more attention heading into the season. Among the over-the-top storylines was the Bills’ offseason unloading of veterans:

It was easy to fire the Bills this offseason. They are down – again – after having to cut large sums of salary which have undoubtedly deteriorated four positions. It’s hard to argue that the Bills are better at receiver, offensive line, defensive line or in the secondary now than they were a year ago.

Khalil Shakir is the only receiver on the roster to catch a pass from Josh Allen after the departures of Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield. But Allen won’t look around like Travolta confused. Tight ends project to carry more of the load. The upside of Shakir and Keon Coleman cannot be overlooked. And James Cook and Curtis Samuel should combine for over 100 catches. If even one of the Mack Hollins/Chase Claypool/Marquez Valdes-Scantling trio does it NothingBuffalo will be more than fine, I suppose.

Don’t panic, Buffalo Bills fans

Buffalo’s young talent is good enough to make up for the loss in production. The Buffalo Bills should also be good in the trenches on both sides of the football, as Edholm points out.

Both the offensive and defensive lines have a chance to be good units. I worry about the depth at both spots, but the starting groups still have strength. Good health would go a long way in providing essential stability.

There is also the Josh Allen effect. The quarterback has proven himself to be among the best in the league year after year, even if he hasn’t been able to make it to the Super Bowl yet. He is a player who can carry a team thanks to his skills:

But for me, what makes this story more over-the-top than it needs to be is Allen’s presence. He’s the obvious meal ticket, and it’s possible that there’s an addition-by-subtraction quotient at play here that’s being overlooked. There is no longer a need to force Diggs to feed or give targets to the maddeningly inconsistent Davis.

This will be Allen’s toughest task, though, especially with the AFC East also improving.

Aaron Rodgers enters this season healthy and the Miami Dolphins have already challenged the Bills for first place in the division despite falling short. Still, Buffalo has the experience to make the playoffs and potentially succeed.
