Around 500 dead fish found in pond in Utah

HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4) — Biologists with the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources responded to Cove Pond in Herriman on Monday after receiving reports of dead fish in the water.

Officials arrived at the pond and confirmed there were about 500 dead fish in the pond. However, the DWR said the number could be higher as the original estimate was 500 fish.

“Most of the dead fish are catfish, but a few bluegills and green sunfish have also died,” the DWR explained in a press release.

The DWR said it was working with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and other local organizations to find out what caused the fish to die.

While authorities investigate the incident, Cove Pond is closed to fishing.

“As an abundance of caution, we recommend that anglers do not eat any fish caught from the pond today,” the DWR said.

The investigation is ongoing.
