Newly appointed South African MP suspended for racist remarks – Voice of Nigeria

Controversial South African opposition politician Renaldo Gouws has been suspended from his party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), less than a week after being sworn in as a member of parliament.

His suspension came after videos he made about 15 years ago in which he can be seen using racist language against black people resurfaced on the Internet.

Initially, there were suspicions that one of the videos was fake, but the public prosecutor’s office issued a statement on Thursday saying that the video’s authenticity had been established.
The party said his comments did not reflect the interests of its organisation and that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated against Gouws before the Federal Legal Commission.

The South African Human Rights Commission also announced that it would take legal action against him before the Equality Court.
The controversy arose when the DA joined the African National Congress in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s newly formed government of national unity.
