Kindergarten child dies, mother injured after collision with school bus in New York

According to sources and reports, a kindergarten student was killed and his mother was injured Thursday morning when the two were struck by a school bus on their way to school in Westchester County.

The boy and his mother were about half a block from their elementary school in Mamaroneck shortly after 8:30 a.m. when they were struck – killing the boy, according to lodhud.com and sources.

The vehicle involved was not identified by the dealership, but News12 identified it as a mini school bus.

“There is nothing worse for a community than the loss of a human life and we know that everyone in the Mamaroneck and Larchmont communities is deeply saddened by this news,” school district officials said in a message to parents obtained by The Post.

“We also know that the death of a child is especially difficult for other children to cope with,” the message said. “We have informed our staff of this incredible loss and social workers and psychologists are fully deployed at Mamaroneck Avenue School.”

The boy and his mother could not be immediately identified, nor could the bus driver, who sources said remained at the scene on Mamaroneck Avenue.

A passerby told Lohud that he was leaving mass at the nearby St. Vito Catholic Church when he heard the two pedestrians being hit.

“There was nothing I could do at the time,” said John Hunter. “It was just catastrophic.”

Mamaroneck Village police and village officials did not respond to The Post’s requests for comment.
