Election candidate’s team “attacked” at train station

A parliamentary candidate claims he and his team were attacked at a train station in Surrey.

Liberal Democrat Harry Boparai said a man verbally abused a passerby before “attacking” his group.

Surrey Police confirmed that officers were called to Staines station at around 08:00 BST on Monday to “reports of a man engaging in a fight with people and being verbally abusive to them”.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a serious administrative offence and taken into police custody, a spokesman said.

Mr Boparai told the BBC: “This is not about me; this is about a good 50 or 60 people who are witnessing something horrific first thing in the morning.”

He said he felt “really sorry” for the people who were on their way to school and work and witnessed this, and also for the “poor person” who he claimed had previously been “verbally abused” by the man.

The British Transport Police is leading the investigation into the incident.
