In another tragic accident in Pune, two engineering students were killed when they were hit by a truck, police said on Tuesday. The driver of the truck tried to flee but was caught after a brief chase.

The two students were riding their motorcycles on Monday evening when the truck hit the duo from behind. The hit-and-run accident occurred at 10.30 p.m. on Monday in the Chandan Nagar area of ​​Pune.

Three engineering students, all in their early 20s, were on their way to Pune railway station on the Pune-Ahmednagar road, police said.

Two of the three students were on their way to their hometown of Latur in Maharashtra by train.

The truck hit her motorcycle from behind. One teenager died at the scene of the accident, the other during treatment in hospital.

“While they were travelling, the truck rammed their motorcycle from behind. One youth died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries in hospital,” Anand Khobre, inspector of Vimaltal police station, told PTI.

The truck driver tried to flee. However, police and residents were able to stop him 300 meters from the accident site.

The truck driver was arrested and charged under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (intentional killing not amounting to murder) and other relevant sections, police said.

The tragedy occurred in the midst of the Porsche controversy. A 17-year-old boy had accidentally hit and killed two technicians earlier this month. He was caught but released on condition that he write an essay on road safety. After a huge uproar, his bail was revoked and he was sent to a reformatory.

The boy was travelling in his father’s Porsche shortly after consuming alcohol at two bars in Pune. Police later arrested the owners of the bars and the father of the minor accused.

They also arrested the minor’s grandfather for forcing the driver to take responsibility for the accident.
