Oxford man thrown from moped in hit-and-run accident on Route 34

MONROE, CT — A 27-year-old Oxford man was riding a 1984 Yamaha QT50 eastbound on Route 34 near the Stevenson Dam Sunday afternoon when the driver of a black Honda Accord allegedly struck his motorcycle while passing him near the curve before the dam, causing the driver to be ejected and reportedly land on his back on the road.

Instead of stopping, the driver of the Honda allegedly left the scene of the accident at a high rate of speed, according to police. Oxford police were notified but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Police said another driver who did not see the accident saw the Oxford man standing on the side of the road with his moped and called 911.

Monroe EMS personnel examined the driver at the scene. Although he complained of injuries to his left arm and collarbone, he refused further treatment, according to police.

He told police that a black Honda Accord with a spoiler had hit him, but he did not see the driver and did not remember the license plate, the report said.

Police are investigating the hit-and-run accident, which was reported around 4 p.m.

A 51-year-old Bridgeport man told police he closed his eyes briefly Friday afternoon before his orange 2016 Toyota RAV4 veered off the right side of Garder Road and struck a utility pole, breaking it in two, just east of Applegate Lane.

According to police, he told officers he was not injured. The driver was fined for failing to stay in the proper lane and his damaged vehicle was towed. Eversource Energy was hired to repair the pole.

The road was closed while police responded to the single-vehicle crash that occurred around 12:10 p.m.
