Investigation underway after dead dogs found in abandoned U-Haul truck in Boston – Boston 25 News

BOSTON – An investigation is underway after three dead dogs were found in an abandoned U-Haul truck in Boston on Tuesday night, officials said.

Shortly before 9 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting a “horrible smell” coming from a pickup truck that had been parked for weeks at 69 Edgewater Drive in Mattapan. Inside, they found three motionless medium-sized dogs and a bag of dog food in the passenger area, according to a Boston police dispatch report.

An animal welfare officer called to the scene said the dogs were “bloated” in the sweltering truck, noting that temperatures in Boston rose above 90 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday and Tuesday.

While officers were working on the scene, a resident approached the car and said he saw at least two dogs in the car “jumping around and barking” on July 4. However, the animals “were not let out of the car.”

“At dusk, when the fireworks went off, they could hear the dogs barking,” officials wrote in the report.

Other neighbors told officers that a man who lives “around the corner” uses the van for work and parks it at 69 Edgewater Drive because there isn’t enough space on his street.

The man, described as having “dark skin and dreadlocks,” was reportedly seen driving around with a black female dog in his van on July 5, taking the dogs with him.

Another man told officers that he spotted two men with “cleaning equipment” outside the van on the morning of July 8 and that a woman told him she saw the dogs “alive 2-3 days ago.”

A 5-gallon water jug, 3 gallons of water, a gray tray, a bottle of bleach and a can of Arizona tea were discovered on the sidewalk near the front of the van, police noted in the report. The Boston Department of Public Works was called to clean up the area.

Anyone with information about the dogs is asked to contact investigators at 617-343-5607. Anonymous tips can be made by calling the CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-494-TIPS or by texting the word “TIP” to CRIME.

The investigation is ongoing.
