Stolen money from Delaware Department of Labor leads to investigation

An open government group has called on the Delaware General Assembly to investigate an undisclosed embezzlement case in the state Department of Labor’s Unemployment Insurance Division.

John Flaherty, board member of the Delaware Coalition for Open Government (DelCOG), said the request for the investigation follows a May 6 WHYY News report about a former Delaware Department of Labor supervisor who embezzled more than $181,000 from the state’s unemployment insurance trust fund in 2023.

The state did not disclose the embezzlement, even though the law requires disclosure of illegal activities in official reports, Flaherty said.

“The exposure of all of this came through the WHYY radio article,” he said. “We felt that it should not be the news media that exposes these breaches of trust.”

The Delaware Department of Labor and the Delaware State Audit Office were working Thursday morning to provide statements on the matter.
