A police statement said officers responded to the scene around 9:15 p.m. A victim soon told officers that the attacker was a masked man with a knife.

Police said the incident occurred “in the restroom of a commercial building.” Local investigators began working with state police investigators and officials from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to identify and locate the person behind the alleged attack.

As law enforcement investigations continued, local residents hoped the attacker would be found soon.

“I always walk around at night with pepper spray and something to protect myself no matter where I am in the city,” said Hannah Graves, who lives nearby. “So maybe it wouldn’t change that area. But as a young woman walking around the city, I am always worried about my safety.

Cambridge Police said officers had sent extra patrols to the area around where this incident occurred “as an added precaution.”

“As always, residents are reminded to call 911 immediately if they ever feel threatened or observe any suspicious activity,” police said.
