Women cut off dead man’s thumb to get Cash App

Affidavit: 2 women accused of gaining access to dead man’s Cash App by cutting off his thumb

Severed thumb was used to access victim’s phone and get Cash App, officials say

Two women are in custody for allegedly gaining access to a dead man’s Cash App account by cutting off his thumb. In a 49-page affidavit filed in D.C. District Superior Court, investigators laid out a cruel and diabolical plan. They said one of the women knew the victim, who was found dead in his apartment with blunt force trauma to the head. He had also been stabbed and his right thumb had been cut off, WBAL-TV’s sister station WRC-TV reported. Witnesses told police the women used the severed thumb to unlock his phone and withdraw money from his Cash App account. Officials said surveillance video showed the two women, as well as two men, entering and leaving the victim’s apartment over several days. Police said investigators made a key break in the case when the victim’s cellphone last beeped from a tower in College Park, Prince George’s County, not far from the apartment where one of the women rents an apartment. One of the women remains in jail in Washington, D.C., while the other is being held in Prince George’s County.
