Lightning suspends play at the Evian Championship as Angela Stanford, playing her final major, storms up the scoreboard

Only lightning could interrupt Angela Stanford’s fine golf streak when play was halted at the Amundi Evian Championship. The 46-year-old, making her final major tournament start on the course that made her a major winner in 2018, was 5 under par on her final four holes when Round 2 was suspended at 10:23 a.m. EDT due to hazardous conditions.

Japanese Ayaka Furue leads the field by three strokes with 12 under par. She is six under par after 13 holes. Australian Stephanie Kyriacou has two holes to go and is nine under par, tied with Haeran Ryu, who has only played 11 holes.

Stanford, who just teed off on the par-4 13th hole, is tied for fourth place with Patty Tavatanakit at 8 under par.

World number one Nelly Korda, who has missed her last three cuts, including two majors, holed a beautiful par save on the 14th hole just before the horn. She is 1 over par today and 1 under par in the tournament. Players with even par or better are currently within the cut line.

Officials expect it will take at least an hour before play resumes.

On Tuesday of Evian week, Stanford joined Golfweek’s Big Pickle podcast to discuss the end of her decades-long career and reflect on winning in France six years ago. She is the only American to win Evian since it became a major in 2013. If she wins this week, she would be the oldest major winner in LPGA history.
