A Pro Bowler is still a free agent and he plays a position the Houston Texans need

Every day we get closer and closer to training camp. The team is almost ready and expectations are set. However, just because we are close to the start of the season doesn’t mean teams aren’t still making moves to improve their team. After all, the Tennessee Titans did just that with Jamal Adams.

Adams was signed by the Titans on a one-year, veteran-rated minimum deal, potentially giving them a top-tier safety. That is, if Adams can return to his pre-2022 form. It’s possible, he’s only 28, but he’s had some injuries and his play has suffered. If that continues, he’ll likely be a rental for the Titans and gone by the start of the season.

If he bounces back, the Titans will be much better off. The Houston Texans are watching an arms race unfold before their eyes and they don’t seem to mind. If it were a cornerback or a defensive end, the Titans would have more power. Those aren’t positions the team should be concerned about right now.

Safety, on the other hand, is a key component. Something the Texans can change if they want. Right now, former Denver Broncos player Justin Simmons is looking for a new position. The Texans, as it happens, probably need that position.

Jimmie Ward and Jalen Pitre are the starters, and the team is counting on veterans MJ Stewart and Calen Bullock to back them up. Bullock, the team’s third-round pick, could be in a position to challenge for a starting job. Ward has been good in 2023, but nothing extraordinary. Pitre has been inconsistent and far from an obvious name to lean on to start the season.

A player like Simmons could be exactly what the safety position needs. If Ward isn’t released and Pitre remains inconsistent, Simmons could come in and give the defensive secondary some much-needed stability. He’s an obvious upgrade over Pitre.

The only question we have is its price and what Texans are willing to pay.
