Boxer killed in Anne Arundel County shooting wanted to become a professional

BALTIMORE – Isaiah Oludayo Olugbemi, a well-known local boxer who was shot and killed Monday night, dreamed of competing as a professional.

According to the owner of the Anne Arundel County gym where Olugbemi primarily trained, he was considering making this big jump by the end of the year.

Olugbemi, 27, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the area of Meadowmist Way and Stehlik Drive in Odenton. He was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he died.

“At the amateur level, it’s devastating for the trainer when a fighter who knew nothing from the first day he walked into the gym wins the national Golden Gloves championship three years later,” said gym owner Christen Jeter.

Nicholas Francis Xavier Giroux, 36, was charged with premeditated murder in Olugbemi’s death.

Investigators believe that it was not a random shot, but a targeted one.

Abraham Olugbemi, the victim’s brother, said Giroux was Isaiah Olugbemi’s neighbor.

He claims Giroux threatened Isaiah Olugbemi with a gun at least two other times this year: once in January and a second time in June.

In the most recent incident, the family member said Giroux cocked a gun during an altercation with Olugbemi, but when police arrived to investigate, no arrests were made.

Maryland court records show that Giroux has not been charged in connection with the alleged incidents described by a relative.

WJZ has asked the police for information about recordings of previous clashes, but has not received a response as of Tuesday evening.

Jeter remembers Olugbemi as a dedicated amateur boxer whose legacy will live on in those who looked up to him.

“We have a youth boxing program here and everyone idealized him because he was what they called the champion. So I think his legacy will be carried on by the younger boxers,” Jeter said.

Police are asking all owners of private surveillance cameras or recording doorbell cameras to make all videos available to investigators.
