Communal clashes in Balasore: Odisha state Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday spoke to Balasore Collector Ashish Thakare and directed him to take immediate action to bring the situation under control.

Balasor: Tension prevailed in Odisha’s Balasore district on Monday following clashes between people of two communities, prompting authorities to impose a curfew and shut down internet services to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident. According to police, a few people were injured and several vehicles damaged in the violence.

A group of people staged a dharna in Bhujakhia Pir area of ​​the city on Monday to protest against the blood of animal sacrifices on the streets. The members of another group pelted them with stones, leading to clashes, police said. Some people, including policemen, were reportedly injured in the stone-pelting.

Curfew imposed, internet shut down

The district administration has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in Balasore, which prohibits unlawful assembly of five or more persons and unauthorized public functions, including religious and political ones. The curfew, which has been in effect since midnight on June 17, will remain in force till midnight on June 18. “A curfew has been imposed in Balasore municipal area. All commercial establishments and shops will remain closed,” said Balasore SP Sagarika Nath.

The administration has also suspended internet service in certain sensitive areas of the city and asked people to stay in their houses and not to step out. “All entry points to OT Road are closed. No one is allowed to step out of their house or move or travel on foot or by car except for emergency medical assistance,” a police official said, according to PTI.

30 arrests, police operation in sensitive areas

Deputy Director General of Police (Law & Order) Sanjay Kumar visited Balasore to take stock of the situation, police said, adding that a flag march was also held in the city. Around 30 people have been arrested so far in connection with the clashes, police added. “Adequate police arrangements have been made in the sensitive areas and the situation is coming under control, though sporadic violence was reported at some places yesterday,” a senior police official said.
