ATV rider killed in UP crash; 11-year-old passenger survives – 9&10 News

UPPER PENINSULA – A 33-year-old Chicago man was killed in an off-road vehicle crash, officials said Tuesday.

On Sunday at approximately 8:15 p.m., Michigan State Police patrol officers from the Manistique Outpost were dispatched to Hemlock Trail in Thompson Township, Schoolcraft County, on a 911 call regarding an off-road vehicle accident.

When police arrived, they found that a quad bike had gotten out of control and overturned. The driver and passenger were thrown out, they reported. The quad then rolled over the driver, causing life-threatening injuries, police reported.

Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the driver, from Chicago, was pronounced dead at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital after being transported there by Manistique EMS, police said.

The passenger, an 11-year-old niece of the killed man, suffered minor injuries, police said.

At the time of the accident, neither driver was wearing a helmet, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

The officers were assisted by Manistique Public Safety and Sault Tribal Police.
