A 21-year-old man was shot and four others were arrested early Sunday when the Macomb County car they were in, which had been reported stolen, was involved in a head-on collision with Melvindale police and a subsequent shootout, authorities said.

Michigan State Police said Melvindale troopers responded to the Schaefer Road area west of Interstate 75 at 12:45 a.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle. As they attempted to stop the car, the driver of the suspect vehicle drove toward the patrol car and struck it head-on.

There were six people in the suspect’s vehicle when one of the occupants was seen with a gun, state police said.

Officials said officers fired a gun at the man, hitting a 21-year-old man in the vehicle.

It was recently reported that the shooting victim underwent surgery at an unnamed hospital.

“All suspects fled the scene and five of the six are in custody,” police said, adding that they are two adults and three juveniles. “The suspect’s vehicle was reported stolen in the city of Sterling Heights.”

Melvindale police asked detectives from the Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigations Division to investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure when a police officer is involved in a shooting.

The area where officers located the suspects is described as a Ford and GM storage area. It appears the suspects broke into several vehicles in the storage area, investigators said.

None of the police officers were injured in the incident.

The investigations are ongoing. Once completed, the reports will be submitted to the public prosecutor’s office for review.
