Pilot is only survivor of plane crash in Nepal with 18 dead

A plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Nepal’s capital on Wednesday, killing 18 people and leaving the pilot injured as the only survivor. Police official Basanta Rajauri said authorities had recovered all 18 bodies. The pilot suffered eye injuries but was out of danger, said a doctor at Kathmandu Medical College Hospital, where the pilot is being treated. The doctor spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media. A press release from Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said the Saurya Airlines domestic flight, bound for the resort town of Pokhara, took off from Kathmandu airport at 11:11 a.m. local time and turned right, but crashed in the eastern part of the airport moments later. It is monsoon season in Kathmandu, but there was no rain at the time of the crash. However, visibility over the capital was poor. Kathmandu Airport, Nepal’s main airport, is located in a valley surrounded by mountains on most sides. The airport is considered a challenging airport for pilots, and larger aircraft must come through an opening in the mountain to land. It is located right next to the city and surrounded by houses and residential areas. The bodies were taken to TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for autopsy. The airline’s passenger list showed that there were two pilots and 17 passengers on board. The crew and 16 passengers were Nepali nationals, and one passenger was identified as a Yemeni national. Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal’s main airport for international and domestic flights, was closed as rescue personnel and investigators began their work. Saurya Airlines uses the Bombardier CRJ 200 on domestic routes. In 2019, a Bangladeshi passenger plane crashed at Tribhuvan Airport. 51 people died while 20 on board survived. An investigation confirmed that the plane was not on the runway and its pilot had become disoriented. He was attempting to land out of “sheer desperation” when the plane crashed. In 2015, a Turkish Airlines jet skidded off a slippery airport runway while landing in thick fog. There were 238 people on board the plane, but no one was seriously injured.
