Police shot and killed woman in mental crisis – NBC10 Philadelphia

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating after a woman was shot and killed by police officers during an incident at a Fort Lee apartment complex early Sunday.

The incident occurred when police responded to a call from a man who said “his sister was having a mental health crisis and needed to go to the hospital,” officials said. The incident occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at The Pinnacle apartment complex on Main Street in Fort Lee.

The caller, according to officials, told police that his sister had a knife.

At that point, officials said, an officer who answered the call was speaking to the man who had called the police in the hallway outside the apartment unit and saw two women in the apartment.

The women told the officer not to come in and closed the door, police officials said.

The officer then stopped at the door and knocked. He asked the women to open the door because more officers would arrive at the scene.

When the women did not comply, police broke down the door, and when the sister in the apartment approached officers in the hallway, one of the officers fired a single shot, police officials said.

The shot, according to police officers, hit the sister in the chest.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital after the incident, where she was pronounced dead at around 1:58 a.m., officials said.

According to police, officers found a knife at the crime scene.

However, as of about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, police had not provided any further information regarding the identification of the woman who was killed.

The police also did not say whether the woman was armed with the knife at the time of her murder.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, officials said.
