Police officer injured in pursuit after shooting in Newark West Ward

A police officer suffered life-threatening injuries late Thursday night while pursuing a suspect involved in a shooting in Newark’s West Ward.AdvertisementInitial reports said the incident occurred around 11 p.m. after a ShotSpotter device detected gunshots at 681 South 20th Street.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male suspect, believed to be the shooter, fleeing the neighborhood.

He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. While some officers cordoned off the area after discovering bullet casings, others began a chase to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Fortunately, no bystanders were injured in the shooting.AdvertisementThe injured officer, who was injured in the pursuit and not in the shooting, is expected to make a full recovery, according to reports.

The search for the suspect continues and the investigation is ongoing.
