Drivers are asked not to apologize to other road users after a car accident

An expert has advised drivers to avoid doing simple things after a car accident as they could lead to further problems.

Research by the road safety charity Brake estimates that five people die on the roads in the UK every day and a further 82 are seriously injured.

In 2022, 1,766 people were killed and nearly 29,000 people were seriously injured on the roads; data shows that the number of road accidents has increased again after the pandemic.

Since accidents in road traffic are commonplace across the country, experts urge drivers to act correctly and carefully in the event of an accident.

Drivers should always write down everything that happened after an accident

First of all, the experts recommend carrying a recording device in your car in case you are involved in an accident or witness one.

This can be as simple as carrying a mobile phone or a notepad to make notes about the vehicles involved, the time of the accident, the weather conditions and what happened.

Drivers should always have their driving license, insurance and vehicle registration with them when they are in the car. Orange cones or warning triangles can also be helpful in the event of an accident.

A spokesman for personal injury law firm John Foy and Associates said drivers involved in an accident should stop as quickly as possible and check for injuries before calling the police.

They added: “Even if the accident seems minor, it is important to have this report as evidence. You can later obtain a copy of the report from the local police.

“When speaking to the police, stick to the facts of the accident. It’s easy to get upset or emotional after a car accident, but don’t admit fault or apologize to the other driver.

“Talk to the other driver and exchange names, phone numbers and insurance information. Try to remain calm and polite and avoid blaming or apologizing.”

If someone assigns blame or apologizes, it may be seen as an admission of guilt and could be used against them when determining compensation.

Seriously injured drivers or passengers should go to the hospital immediately. Experts recommend that you report any injuries when reporting the accident.

Regardless of who is responsible for the incident, everyone involved should contact their insurance company and inform them of the accident with all the information they have gathered.

The spokesman added that whether the two drivers were partially at fault for the accident would impact the amount of compensation they could be entitled to.

They added: “A car accident is a traumatic experience and it is important to be prepared and know what steps to take in the event of an accident.”
