New Age | Five death row inmates suspended after escaping from Bogura prison

Five people, including two prison officers and three guards, were suspended in two separate orders on Wednesday and Thursday after four death row inmates escaped from Bogura District Prison in the early hours of Wednesday.

The prison headquarters on Thursday issued an order suspending Assistant Jailer Md Hossainuzzaman and Chief Warden Farid Uddin of Bogura District Jail, Bogura Jail officials said.

They said that District Jail Superintendent Md Anwar Hossain had already suspended three jail guards, namely Dulal Uddin, Adbul Matin and Ariful Islam, on Wednesday.

Bogura Deputy Commissioner Md Saiful Islam told New Age on Friday that he was aware of the suspension of five persons in this connection.

“The prison buildings were constructed during the then British rule. The prison is now in a dilapidated condition,” he said, adding that neither the prison authorities nor the building department had informed the district administration about the precarious condition of the prison.

The prison break occurred in the early hours of June 26, when the convicts escaped from the prison via the roof of the death row.

The authorities reacted quickly and arrested the escaped convicts near the Chelopara Bridge that same day.

The Prison Authority has set up a three-member inquiry committee on the matter and the committee has been asked to submit its report within four working days from Thursday.
