RAS boss charged with Tempe rail accident

The Larissa Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against the head of the Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS) in connection with the fatal train accident in Tempe, following the recommendation of the appeal investigator.

The charges include intentional and repeated disruption of traffic safety through omission. The collision in February 2023 in Tempe, central Greece, was the deadliest rail accident in the country, leaving 57 dead and many injured. The ongoing criminal investigations are examining the implementation of Contract 717 and the deficiencies in signaling and safety measures on the railway.

As part of the investigation, which was based on a complaint filed by relatives of the victim, charges of misconduct were also filed against three fire department investigators and a superior. This brings the number of defendants in this case to 41.

The cases mentioned in the complaint involving forensic experts and legal experts have been archived, while the cases involving judicial officials are being reviewed by prosecutors outside Larissa.
