Michael C. Hall revives in “Resurrection”

In a television miracle, Michael C. Hall returns to play Dexter Morgan, proving that you just can’t keep a crime-solving serial killer dead.

Showtime announced Friday that Hall, 53, will reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan, the character he played from 2006 to 2013 on the Showtime series “Dexter” and again from 2021 to 2023 on “Dexter: New Blood.”

This unbelievable return will air on television next summer as “Dexter: Resurrection.” Hall will also return as Dexter (voice only) for the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin,” which is currently in production.

“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his legendary role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series of all time,” said Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Studios, in a statement. “While ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ will introduce a whole new generation of viewers to this legendary series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to satisfy existing audiences as well.”

Even the most naive Dexter Morgan – the former Miami Police Department blood spatter specialist with a penchant for killing bad guys – would know that the serial killer died at the end of the series “Dexter: New Blood.” So how Dexter returns for “Resurrection” is anyone’s guess.

Hall is pulling double duty and is also working on the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.” Set in the ’90s, the series features Hall as the inner voice of young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson). “Original Sin” will hit Paramount+ in December.

In Original Sin, Gibson’s aspiring serial killer and college graduate begins putting his deadly talents to use during a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department. Patrick Dempsey plays Miami Metro Homicide Captain Aaron Spencer, and Christian Slater plays Dexter’s father, homicide detective Harry Morgan.

Both series are executive produced by Hall and Clyde Phillips, who worked on the previous two Dexter series. Both Hall and Phillips were at Comic-Con to preview Original Sin. Dexter’s sister Debra (Molly Brown) also appears in the clip.
