Two Opelousas natives killed in boating accident

SABINE PARISH, Louisiana – On May 28, 2024, search and rescue teams were dispatched to a fatal boating accident in Sabine Parish.

Responding agencies included the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office and Sabine Parish Fire District.

According to LDWF agents, the body of 27-year-old Macy Richard of Opelousas was recovered from Toledo Bend Lake by search and rescue teams shortly after they arrived at the incident. At approximately 4:30 p.m., search and rescue teams recovered the body of 57-year-old Jerilyn Hebert of Opelousas.

Survivors reported that five clients were chartering a fishing boat with a guide when wind and waves suddenly increased. At about 11:50 a.m., a wave struck the pontoon boat, capsizing it and sweeping all six people into the water. The guide was able to call 911.

Upon arrival, LDWF agents found three of the clients and the tour guide clinging to the capsized vessel. At around 1pm, agents managed to pull them onto the LDWF vessel.

The bodies of Richard and Hebert were turned over to the Sabine Parish Coroner’s Office for an official determination of cause of death.

According to officials, the U.S. Coast Guard will be the lead agency in investigating the fatal boating accident.
