Seamus Marley: IRA member who raped two boys has been released from Midlands prison

Seamus Marley was released from Co Laois prison early this morning.

In 2019, Seamus Marley (52) was sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting and anal raping two boys in County Louth during dates in the early 1990s.

The brutal attacks took place in what was described as a republican safe house near the border in County Louth when the two boys were 13 or 14 and 16 or 17 years old respectively.

This morning, just after 6:30am, rapist Marley left Co Laois prison after serving his sentence.

Authorities have reportedly been informed that he will be residing in the Donnybrook area of Dublin 4.

During the trial, the court heard how Marley threatened one of the boys that he would be found dead on a border road if he ever told anyone what had happened.

One of the boys said in a victim impact statement that Marley abused, groomed and ruined him during his most crucial years.

The abuse began in 1991 when Marley, then in his early 20s, was hiding from police in County Louth.

Paudie McGahon, one of Marley’s victims, testified in court that his father, Jack McGahon, a staunch republican supporter, had allowed the family home to be used as a safe house for republican terrorists fleeing the police.

When Judge Paul McDermott sentenced Marley to seven years in prison, he said the terrorist had exploited his position in the republican movement, which was “quite capable of secret murders”, to silence his victims.

Speaking to the Irish Independent last week, McGahon said he believed Marley still posed a danger to children.

“The probation officers and the Gardaí need to keep a close eye on Marley because I firmly believe he still poses a danger to children,” said McGahon, who waived his anonymity to speak on behalf of himself and the second victim.

“Despite what he did to me and the other victim, and the fact that the jury had no doubt that Marley was guilty as charged, the authorities have told us that he has never been to therapy or admitted his guilt or shown any kind of remorse – he is in complete denial.”

During his trial, the court was told that Marley, who is now a born-again Christian, had a 16-year relationship with a Spanish man and was heavily involved in charitable work during that time.

His father, Larry Marley, was a leading Republican who was assassinated by loyalists in 1987.

Larry Marley is said to have been the mastermind of the IRA mass escape from Maze Prison in 1983.

In sentencing, Judge Paul McDermott noted that Marley had pleaded not guilty and had shown no genuine remorse.

The judge ordered Marley to complete a two-year community protection supervision program after serving his prison sentence.
