Employee of an ice cream parlor in Elk Grove injured in attack

What started as a normal Tuesday shift at the Elk Grove Baskin Robbins/Togo’s on Laguna Boulevard ended with one employee in the hospital and others shaken. Employees said a customer came into the store and ordered a sandwich before things took a turn. The suspect began yelling at an employee and then chased him to the back of the store, where she found Emily Ruiz, another employee, and punched her in the face, slamming her into a door. Ruiz turned to run away and the suspect hit her again with a backpack. “She hit me and I was just like, ‘What? What happened?’ I was in shock and then tried to go inside to go to a manager and she hit me again and my head started hurting and I was so nervous,” Ruiz said. Instead of going home that day, Ruiz went to the hospital. “I can’t turn my shoulder or neck and I have shoulder pain,” she said. She left the store with a large scratch on her neck and face, and medication for a bump on her head. Fortunately, security cameras and an employee captured most of the violent scenes on video, allowing Elk Grove police to investigate the attack and identify the suspect. Stephany Gallegos, another employee, witnessed the whole thing. “She was yelling at my coworker and chasing him. And then she reached back, to the door over there, and my coworker Emily tried to stop her. She told her she couldn’t come back here anymore. And then she slammed her against the door,” Gallegos said. Employees called store manager Michelle Narayan, who rushed over in disbelief. “It was really scary.” “We’ve been here 30 years,” Narayan said. “We’ve never seen anything like this.” All employees said they’d noticed an increase in aggressive customers, but never to this level. “If someone gets that violent over a sandwich, they’re clearly a danger to other people and themselves. So I just want Emily to be able to press charges as well because what happened to her was not OK,” Gallegos said. The manager said she’s working on getting two additional locks and an additional panic button installed in the building. As of Wednesday evening, the suspect had not been arrested. What began as a normal Tuesday shift at the Elk Grove Baskin Robbins/Togo’s on Laguna Boulevard ended with one employee in the hospital and others shaken.

Employees said a customer came into the store and ordered a sandwich before the situation changed.

The suspect began yelling at an employee and then chased him to the back of the store, where she encountered Emily Ruiz, another employee, punching her in the face and slamming her against a door.

Ruiz turned to run away and the suspect struck her again with a backpack.

“She hit me and I was like, ‘What? What happened?’ I was in shock and then I tried to go to the manager’s office to go to a manager, but she hit me again and my head started to hurt and I was nervous,” Ruiz said.

Instead of going home that day, Ruiz went to the hospital.

“I can’t turn my shoulder or neck and I have shoulder pain,” she said.

She left the building with a large scratch on her neck and face and medication for a bump on her head.

Fortunately, surveillance cameras and an employee captured most of the violent scenes on tape, allowing Elk Grove police to investigate the attack and identify the suspect.

Stephany Gallegos, another employee, witnessed the whole thing.

“She was yelling at my coworker and chasing him. And then she reached back, to the door there, my coworker Emily, she tried to stop her, kind of told her she couldn’t come back here. And then she slammed her against the door,” Gallegos said.

The employees called the store manager, Michelle Narayan, who rushed over in disbelief.

“It was really scary. We’ve been here for 30 years,” Narayan said. “We’ve never experienced anything like this.”

All employees stated that they had noticed an increase in aggressive customers, but never to this extent.

“When someone becomes that violent over a sandwich, they are clearly a danger to others and themselves. That’s why I want Emily to be able to press charges, because what happened to her was not okay,” Gallegos said.

The manager said she is working on having two more locks and an additional panic button installed in the building.

As of Wednesday evening, the suspect had not yet been arrested.
