This guy raped a 12-year-old girl – the Netherlands got him out of prison and sent him to the Olympics

(Warning: Potentially triggering content)

Well, forget all the others 2024 Olympics Controversy for now. This one is the absolute high point. Get ready…but if you want to follow the events, you may have to witness a known child molester take to the world stage!

Steven Van de Velde was convicted in 2016 of raping a 12-year-old girl. BBC As it was reported at the time, this all happened in August 2014. The Dutch volleyball star was already 19 years old at the time, a grown man with Olympic prospects, when he met the British teenager through social media. Despite being aware of her age, Van de Velde travelled to her home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK. He waited until her mother had left, went in and had sex with her, taking her virginity. He returned to the Netherlands but was eventually extradited and arrested by British authorities in January 2016.

He pleaded guilty and confessed to three counts of rape of a child. He even confessed to his crimes in court. He apparently received some degree of leniency for his confession. He was sentenced to only four years in prison. But the problem is… He only served ONE. He was released in 2017.

This is not allegedly Child molester or a allegedly Child molester. That’s what the records say. Found guilty, even confessed. And yet, as we learned this week, he was chosen by the Netherlands to play beach volleyball under their flag this summer. What the hell.

And before you ask: Yes, the Netherlands knows. In a statement they say: Michel EveraertDirector General of Nevobothe Dutch Volleyball Association, said:

“We know Steven’s background… He was convicted under English law at the time and has served his sentence. Since then, we have been in constant contact with Steven, who is now fully integrated into the Dutch volleyball community.”

Nevobo added:

“After his conviction and sentencing, Steven van de Velde returned step by step to elite sport under expert guidance from probation officers and coaches, among others. Since 2017, he has been taking part in international tournaments again.”

Wait, he came back immediately?! Yes. So they say after his conviction, but that’s not entirely true, is it? The Federation’s official website explained Van de Velde’s reduced sentence. Apparently he was transferred to the Netherlands “due to an agreement” with Britain and then “the sentence was also adjusted to the standards of Dutch law.” We suspect they made him serve his time on the beach.

Interestingly, one of the reasons why Van de Velde was only sentenced at this time is because his defense attorney argued that the loss of his sports career was the real punishment:

“There is real remorse. He has lost an outstanding sporting career and has been branded a rapist. For him, this is clearly the end of his career.”

So we’re guessing he’ll become a star athlete instead AND not have to spend much time in prison. Disgusting.

OK, it is clear that Nevobo just wanted his star athlete back. But what about the Dutch National Olympic Committee? They said in a satisfied statement:

“Van de Velde now meets all qualification requirements for the Olympic Games and is therefore part of the team”

Oh my goodness. The International Olympic Committee told CNN They have submitted to the Dutch NOC, so… We suspect that their hands are tied here for some reason.

The US Center for SafeSport at least disagrees here. In a statement to CNN, CEO Ju’Riese Colon said she was “deeply concerned that any person convicted of sexual abuse of minors could participate in the 2024 Olympic Games”:

“The fact that teams from all over the world are meeting in Paris, including many underage athletes, sends a dangerous message that medals and money are more important than their safety. Participation in sport is a privilege, not a right.”

Damn right. Sports fans who follow the news aren’t happy either. Here are just some of the disgusted comments that have been made so far as the news continues to spread:

“This girl’s life has been changed forever by this monster. How can that be fair?”

“Steven van de Velde was convicted of the ‘planned, calculated’ rape of a 12-year-old girl and faces a life sentence. He has only served part of his four-year sentence and is now being sponsored by the Netherlands at the Olympic Games. Tell me again that a rape conviction ruins a man’s life.”

“There’s a reason we have lifetime sex offender registration in the United States. Pedophiles cannot be reformed. The fact that the Netherlands is sending this pedophile to the Olympics is disgraceful.”

“Female athletes at the Olympics are NOT SAFE! This is a violent sex offender and pedophile. The Netherlands has no problem with this because, you know, he’s good at sports.”

“The Netherlands denied three Olympic-qualified golfers permission to travel to Paris because they thought they weren’t good enough, but they have no problem sending a convicted child molester. For God’s sake.”

What do YOU think about this guy being allowed to get back into his career immediately after raping a 12-year-old girl… again??
